As someone who reads and reviews a good number of products on social media, I’m often asked for book recommendations. Here is a list of some of my top picks:
Search engine optimization is the most important thing to figure out when you’re trying to do online marketing. When it comes to SEO, Melanie Mitchell has seen (and done) it all. She’s worked on both sides of SEO in a variety of industries, so her advice covers the full gamut for whatever line of business you’re currently in. These three pieces work separately, if you’re trying to master a particular aspect of SEO, and also complement one another if you’re looking to develop and execute a well-rounded plan.
These Collections are a great value and are perfect to the reader that’s looking to dive into more than one social media technology. From Facebook and YouTube to Tumblr and foursquare, each piece gives a background on the technology and gives you the steps to create and implement a marketing plan. Most importantly, they also include details on how to measure the success of your social media outreach.
Social BOOM!: How to Master Business Social Media to Brand Yourself, Sell Yourself, Sell Your Product, Dominate Your Industry Market, Save Your Butt, Rake in the Cash, and Grind Your Competition into the Dirt
You simply can’t go wrong with advice from Jeffrey Gitomer: He’s the sales guy. I like his statement about this book: “…Social BOOM! is short, sweet, and all meat.” The book is based on Gitomer’s own three-year process of building a social media platform and offers step-by-step ideas, strategies, and implementable actions that will help you build your business social media infrastructure day-by-day.
Knowing how to write for the online audience is a different animal. The Truth About the New Rules of Business Writing shows you exactly how to do that. Step by step, you'll learn make your point quickly and more effectively. This book covers everything you’ll need, from ad copy to emails to blog entries and text messages!
This book from Monique Reece is a comprehensive how-to on marketing in general. Unlike some of the classic books, Monique integrates social media marketing tactics with classic marketing outreach. One of my favorite things about this book is the organization. It’s clearly divided by marketing tools, so you can dive in at any point in the book.
Naturally, I saved the best for last. Just kidding! I wrote this book, along with Dr. Reshma Shah, to give social media advice from in the trenches. We wanted to cut through the theory and focus on what works to drive maximum value from social media marketing. We also wanted to present practical information, so this book covers both successes and failures so readers can learn the practices to adopt and the behaviors to avoid.
