I used this book as a textbook for a business course at college. There is no detail untouched but illustrates the flexibility necessary for your own business plan.

I bought this book years ago and I still refer to it occasionally. It's a very comprehensive guide. The content is well structured and peppered with wise advice - I'd emphasise the 'intelligent' word in the the title of the book. For a first-time business plan writer, it may be overwhelming, which is why I wrote my Business Plans Made Really Simple: How To Write a Business Plan That Makes Sense to Investors, Colleagues, and Most Of All - You, to provide an easily-digestible high-level view which encourages people to get started on their plan. But this book, being much more in depth, will help anyone who wants to persevere and construct a thoroughly thought out plan.

I had thumbed through a few other business plan books that included worksheets and other mechanisms but that format never really worked for me. This book has plenty of sample sections and examples of good and bad plans, with explanations on how to improve the bad examples. There is also a wealth of advice for presentation and knowing how to make that positive first impression. It takes a slight time investment to get acquainted with the book. I found myself reading the book and writing nothing for a little while before I finally started out writing my own business plan (NB, I'm only about halfway through my current plan). Once you understand the sections that apply to your specific plan, though, understanding the goal of each section becomes much clearer and nearly makes the chore of writing your plan enjoyable. If you're serious about writing a solid business plan, take the time and go through this book, then set out on your own plan. |
