You can design your own career, so you love what you do! You only have one life: why settle for anything less? Whether you’re an entrepreneur or working within a company, Get a Life, Not a Job shows how you can make it happen for yourself. You’ll learn how to move towards a fulfilling career that offers greater work-life balance, financial security, and personal control over your future -- and more sheer pleasure and inspiration from the work you do. You’ll learn how to allocate more time to roles you enjoy, and shed roles you can’t stand… identify career choices you’ll be passionate about, and build your skills and abilities to match them… improve your career without leaving your employer, and make your position more resistant to downsizing… define a mix of several stimulating and liberating wealth-building activities that keep your life engaged and balanced… keep personal relationships healthy while you pursue work you’ll love. This book doesn’t just teach you powerful career techniques: it profiles people in all walks of life who’ve used these them to build truly inspiring careers. With greater workplace uncertainty than ever, you can no longer afford to let anyone else control your destiny — or to maintain outdated “psychological contracts” with your employer. You need to take control of your own career and future. With this book’s help, you can do just that — and make work more fulfilling than you ever dreamt possible.

2.0 out of 5 stars Sad to say this is too rosey a picture, April 5, 2010

Hmmm so many five star reviews? Given the book I was shocked, until I found that most were written by reviewers who have only reviewed one book--this one!

Okay, on with the review.

Paula Caligiuri, a Professor of Human Resource Management at Rutgers points out that the social contract between employer and employee has changed, our work lives take up most of our lives. She encourages people to manage their careers not by changing jobs, but by nurchuring their talents. Professor Caligiuri is clearly a compassionate person who wants people to think seriously about how they spend their lives.

But Paula Caligiuri doesn't realize that people spend their lives in companies because gettting out of a company, at a senior level, and devoting yourself to freelance means making an irreversible decision--labeling yourself as one who "could not make it." If you are over the age of 45 you will be labeled as someone who is washed up. Don't believe me? Try... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Should be required reading, March 19, 2010

As a retired US Army NCO I know how important and difficult it is to advise people on career choices, most people want the answers handed to them. This book is a great tool to help people think for themselves, to look beyond what they do for a daily job and find options for careers within their hobbies and passions. I highly recommend this book. "Get a Life Not a Job" should be mandatory reading for all members of the military and their dependent spouses.
