Product Author Bios

Richard Templar (U.K.) is an astute observer of human behavior and understands what makes the difference between those of us who effortlessly glide toward success and those of us who struggle against the tide. He has distilled these observations into his Rules titles. More than 1.3 million people around the world have enjoyed and now play by Richard Templar's Rules.

Tired of not getting what you want? Don't know how to ask for it? Best-selling author Richard Templar brings his inimitable blend of originality, imagination, wisdom, and straight talk to the challenges of negotiation, persuasion, and influence. Templar offers up 100 clever, simple, pain-free ways to get people to happily say "yes" to you!

Templar is the world-renowned author of best-sellers like The Rules of Money and The Rules of Life. In this new book, he offers practical principles and strategies covering a wide range of situations, both at work and beyond. You'll learn how to get what you want without saying a word… and, for those rare occasions when you have to ask, you'll find the techniques and words that'll get the job done. Every solution gets its own "bite-size" two-page spread, making this book incredibly easy to read--and use.

Some people seem to get what they want consistently and effortlessly. It's not luck: it's knowing how. Read this fresh, funny, and relentlessly practical book, and you'll know how, too.

2.0 out of 5 stars If This Book Was Written For Children I'd Have Given It 5 Stars, August 28, 2011

This book is so basic that I'll read it to my 7 year old, as the lessons in it are perfect for someone her age through their teens; after that, if you haven't learned these lessons, well . . .

The format is ideal for someone who wants a quick read, one to two pages per idea. Inside those one or two pages is one paragraph that outlines the idea, the rest is filler and wasted space.

Honestly, I'm not sure how this series of books have sold more than a million copies. Here are just a few of the one to two page lessons you can expect to learn to become more persuasive (and these should be a given in ANY situation)

Be honest
Work hard
Set deadlines
Write it all down
Look confident
Act confident
Learn to say no (of all the advice in this book this is probably the best)
Get to know people
Pick up the signals
Learn to listen properly
Be objective

The list goes on for 211 pages in the book. The... Read more

There is a litmus test you can run on self-help books to know whether they are a waste of money or not. It takes three simples steps, and How To Get What You Want fails them all.

1) Is the goal stated too broad to actually gain the result stated?

Yup. As I read the self-help book How To Use Celtex Writing Program, I am actually understanding how to use the Celtex Writing software. Can I use this to sell my screenplay? No. This book claim to tell me How To Get What I Want, Without Having To Ask. When I got the book I was scheduled to play in a Poker Tournament. I decided what I wanted was to win it. I followed every step the author suggested, but did not win the tournament. The title lied to me. Should the author have limited the title to "at work" or "in your business", which is all he really focuses on, and you decided you wanted to double your salary next week, it would fail yet again. Warning #1, the title's goal is too broad to actually gain the result... Read more

2.0 out of 5 stars Boring and lame..., September 14, 2011

I wonder if I can get a better book telling me how to get what I want without having to ask for it? I tried to be positive about this book and it is not a long read but halfway in I had to force myself to finish it. I really came to dislike my selection. I felt like the author had "gotten one over on me" by the time I finished this book. Don't waste your hard earned money on this one. I really think that other books are much better than this attempt at a profit by Templar. I agree with other recommendations to read "How to Win Friends and Influence People" by Dale Carnegie. That book will tell you so much more than this book and you will be better prepared for any endeavor you face whether striving for a goal or getting through the day.
