Before training as a clinical psychologist, Dr. Stephen Briers studied at Cambridge University where he was later employed in child development research at the Winnicott Unit. Today Stephen works clinically with both children and adults. His various television appearances include four series of the popular BBC parenting programs Little Angels, and Teen Angels, and Make Me a Grown-Up. He lives and works in Brighton with his wife and two young sons.
In an age where more children are struggling than ever before, how can you raise happy, healthy, fulfilled children... young people who can handle pressure and become successful, independent adults? The secret: give them the skills, tactics, and strategies they need to manage their own lives. In this book, one of the world's most respected child psychologists shows how to do just that, one day, one minute at a time. Dr. Stephen Briers teaches powerful, proactive parenting techniques that don't simply respond to bad behavior, but help keep it from happening in the first place. Drawing on compelling new research on positive psychology, Dr. Briers shows how to cultivate the specific habits of thought that nurture resilience and help "inoculate" against depressive illness; promote happiness and well-being; cultivate personal competence and social confidence; boost your child's problem-solving skills. You'll learn why so many of today's conventional parenting techniques cause more problems than they solve; when to use "carrot and stick" discipline, and when there's a better alternative; why your child is smarter and more capable than you realize and how you can help your child reach his or her fullest potential!

Last month, I checked this out at the local library and was so impressed I just now ordered my own copy so I can mark it up.It's much more than just a book for dealing with or understanding children. I am not raising any children yet I'm finding it very useful in understanding how to deal with ~my own~ emotions and problems and attitudes. Not just children, but adults deal with the issues covered in this book. Both groups feel stress, anxiety, depression, have 'moods', tend to catastrophize, etc. Moreover, wider than just its therapeutic or counseling uses, this book is almost a mini-introduction to some of the approaches of cognitive psychology and positive psychology. Applications include how to have insight into what is probably going on when someone is troubled or upset. The book has useful little 'dialogues' giving examples of being able to discuss difficult issues with those close to you. This is one of the best and most useful books on... Read more

My wife has read this book and loves it. It has given her an insight as to what our kids are thinking and why they do the things they do which in turns helps us understand if the actions need corrected or not and how to correct them.
