To thrive in a world where networks of companies increasingly compete with other networks, managers can no longer focus solely on excellence in planning and execution. In The Spider’s Strategy, top business consultant Amit S. Mukherjee provides the tools you need to sense and respond to unexpected events. He shows why and how managers in your company must apply four powerful “Design Principles” today:

  • Change everyday work practices by embedding “sense and response” within your normal plan-and-execute processes.
  • Promote collaboration across partner companies by establishing practical mechanisms that make “win-win” a basis for action not an empty slogan.
  • Ensure that work really teaches by assuring the culture, processes, and organizational structure to improve your company’s ability to learn.
  • Implement those key technological capabilities that allow the network to function seamlessly.

The heart of this book includes proven implementation advice based on conversations with successful innovators at HP, Nokia, and beyond. Mukherjee offers new insight into everything from work practices to culture and corporate organization and shows how to overcome even the most stubborn obstacles to effective collaboration amongst partners.

Dr. Amit S. Mukherjee, a brilliant corporate strategist, outlines why the networked structures that large firms rely upon can also create significant hazards for them if breakdowns occur. Given today's interconnectivity, companies that cannot quickly adapt to their partners' emergencies may themselves suffer catastrophic losses. Mukherjee details the four primary capabilities that networked businesses must possess and explains how to achieve them. getAbstract advises that senior and middle managers will profit from this thoughtful book and its instructive case histories.

5.0 out of 5 stars Adaptive Strategies - the whys and hows, March 2, 2009
This review is from: The Spider’s Strategy: Creating Networks to Avert Crisis, Create Change, and Really Get Ahead (Hardcover)
I agree with Mr. Rich (in an earlier review), most business books offer a few simple ideas and repeat them so often that once you're half way through the book, you hear yourself saying, "all right, I get it already!". The Spider's Strategy builds its case for the need to effectively manage networks to compete in today's world, identifies four design principles to guide the development of the needed systems, and lays out eight recommendations for making it happen. It's definitely a book to be read with a pencil in hand. Even the quick thoughts on SWOT and NPV analyses, while described on just a page of text, provide insight into the type of strategic thinking needed for companies to succeed in this new competitive era.

I found this book to be very helpful in offering a new perspective in these volatile financial times. The segment on "Adaptive Business" (Plan, Execute, Sense, Respond and Learn) was especially relevant coupled with the network aspect and need for flexibility to conquer business challenges. It shows me some possible alternative approaches to how I run my Project Management Office at work. A very good read....
